The Apple watch could become a medical warning device to let wearers know when things may be going wrong with their health, according to Apple chief executive, Tim Cook
Speaking at Startup Fest Europe in Amsterdam, Cook said: “I love the [Apple] Watch. One day, this is my prediction, we will look back and we will wonder: how can I ever have gone without the Watch?
“Because the holy grail of the Watch is being able to monitor more and more of what’s going on in the body. It’s not technologically possible to do it today to the extent that we can imagine, but it will be.”
CNBC reported that Cook used a car, which has lights come on when the oil is low for an example as to how the Apple Watch could develop to warn users about their health.
Cook said: “What is the equivalent for the body? Well it’s our mind but our minds convince all of us all too often not to seek help. And many times we don’t know there is a symptom, so if you could have a device that knew stuff about you, it would be pretty incredible and would extend life and extend quality.”
In addition to Apple’s chief executive discussing potential future developments in healthcare wearables, the company has been simultaneously seeking to hire a high-level lawyer who specialises in health privacy regulations, according to TechInsider.
In a job posting on Monday, Apple said it seeks a “privacy counsel” focused on “HIPAA, Health” who can work with the company’s engineering teams as well as advise on privacy aspects of acquisitions.
When this information is grouped with Apple’s recruitment of medical engineers in January this year and Cook’s indication late last year that Apple was considering putting ‘something’ through the FDA approval process, there is a suggestion that Apple could have some sort of medical consumer product in its future.
